Downloading the required files, and loading the 10.6.2 kernel is very simple with the instructions:

1 ) Extract the kernel to the root of your hard drive
2 ) Rename the kernel “Mach_Kernel_10_6_2ATOM”
3 ) Open com.apple.Boot.plist with a plist editor

Last time I brought you “Some of The Top Mac Apps for An Incredible Price!“. Today, MacHeist has released a new nanoBundle that have some of the Top Mac Apps for free! The applications in the bundle in my opinion are absolutely worth downloading.

ShoveBox

One of those good applications to keep tidbits of information. It can easily replace the notepad programs as it can keep images, URL’s, and more with a simple drag to the menu bar. The search function also comes in real handy.

WriteRoom

WriteRoom is probably one of the worst apps ever. It’s a text editor that supposedly gives “distraction free” writing. But what’s good with a text editor that has no spell or grammar check? You can go full screen mode in a normal text editor anyways, or maybe use Mariner Write included in this bundle.

Twitterrific

An application to let you manage your Twitter account. It’s a neat app, but right now I think HootSuite suits my needs better.

TinyGrab

Like Snagit for the PC, this is an application that lets you capture and manage screenshots. But a neat feature that TinyGrab has is that you can upload them to your own FTP server.

Hordes of Orcs

This is similar to most tower defense strategy games but in very nice graphics. A good time buster where you can spend hours on end playing this game!

Mariner Write

A very sleek word processor with only the essential things needed to write a report. I find this much easier to use compared to OpenOffice Writer and Microsoft Word.

There you have it! Good Mac apps for any avid computer user to use. Especially for students, and teachers.

Note: Mariner Write is currently not unlocked at the time of writing. There’s need to be 500,000 participants before it is unlocked.

Lots of people have been asking me how to save and download MP3 files in Macintosh Safari. When you open an MP3 file in Safari, you cannot go to the file in the top bar and save as. Instead, Apple has made this a complicated thing!

So there are three ways to save and download Mp3 Files:

Right click or control-click the link to the MP3 File and choose “Download Linked File As”

Paste the URL in the address bar if it is not there already, hold option and press return (sometimes this may not work)

Drag the URL (either the link itself or the icon in the address bar) to the Downloads window

You may also have troubles saving MP3 Files in the Windows Safari version too. So you can use these approaches to save your files in Windows. But keep in mind, the option key is ALT.

Connecting the SMART Cable to your Macintosh:

Make sure the cable is attached to the SMARTBoard and plug it into the USB Port on your Macintosh (refer to the diagram below for more details)

Connecting your Macintosh to a projector:

Connect the VGA cable to the adapter cable (only fits one way)

Connect the computer (that is off) using the cable that is attached to the adapter cable (it also only fits one way).

First turn on your projector, then your computer.

Go to the Apple Menu or the dock and select System Preferences

Click on displays under Hardware (monitor icon)

On the Display tab, select the resolution to be 1024X624

Now select the Arrangement tab, and make sure Mirror Displays is selected

Now on the projector, move the ring around the lens until the image fits the SMARTBoard fully. Also adjust the focus ring that is also around the lens to have a clearer image.

Using the SMARTBoard software you have installed:

Go to the Macintosh hard drive

Open the Applications folder

Click on the SMARTBoard software folder

And double click the SMARTBoardService to start the application

Open up System Preferences again

Click on Ink under the Hardware section

Be sure to have Handwriting recognition On and Allow me to Ink in any application is not selected.

Now browse to the SMARTBoard software folder again

Open SMART Tools and SMART Notebook by double-clicking the icons on the screen and minimize them to the dock

The SMARTBoard must be calibrated to match the computer it’s being used with. To calibrate, push both (black) buttons on the SMARTBoard tray (the keyboard and mouse buttons) at the same time.

On the SMARTBoard, there will be a X. To calibrate, press each X in the center with a SMARTBoard pen. If the SMARTBoard does not seem calibrated right, repeat the process (steps 10,11)

The SMARTBoard should be ready to use

Finding the ultimate multimedia player that can play all files without a codec can be a pain, especially in Mac OS X. But all your problems are solved with Plex. This fully featured multimedia player can play any file you through at it and can replace your front row. Also, it seamlessly synchronizes and connects your local (Mac’s hard drive)/online content.

Download Plex Here

Pros of Plex:

File support is crazy awesome!

Remote support is very good (works very good with the Apple Remote)

The User-interface is very slick

Plex has networking

Supports scripts (you can load youtube and other video sites)

You may customize Plex with skins to change its appearance

Cons that should be fixed:

Maybe a dummy-proof and advanced user interface?

EyeTV Support!!!

DVD playback could be better

Now that you’ve heard about the ultimate multimedia player… What are you waiting for? Start watching some movies!

Note: Plex is based off of XBMC Media Center (but obviously Plex is better). So for those Windows, Linux, and XBOX (yes, XBOX!) users, you can use XBMC Media Center.

XBMC Media Center is available here.
